Eight Learnings from Series 5 of the Early Careers Podcast

RMP Enterprise Co-founder Ollie Sidwell co-hosts The Jack & Ollie Show | The Early Careers Podcast, which shares insights, trends and innovations across the early careers space.

Launched with AllAboutGroup’s Co-founder Jack Denton in September 2018, the 5 star-rated podcast has been a rip-roaring success across the early careers space.

With two (virtual) trips to the USA 🇺🇸 and one to Germany 🇩🇪, Series 5 expanded our ‘Global Insights Series’ into what we can learn from early careers recruitment from other parts of the world. Amongst the virtual globetrotting, we learned all about new Graduate Apprenticeships in Law, how Virtual Onboarding for SAP’s placements panned out and interviewed a panel of students on their experiences with application and assessment processes in what’s been a difficult Summer for students.

Below are eight key learnings from the podcasts and you can listen in full by clicking on each, or finding ‘The Jack & Ollie Show | The Early Careers Podcast’ on any of your major podcasting platforms.

Enjoy! 🎧

Tom, Cristian and Sophie | The impact of Covid-19 on the application & assessment process – The Students’ Perspective

Would you rather... complete 50 applications and get two offers, or focus on your eight target employers and gain one offer? We interview three current undergraduates, Cristian Ene from Loughborough University, Sophie Tew from the University of Leeds and Tom White from the University of Liverpool, to hear about their application and assessment strategies, experiences and hear the advice they’d give to employers and universities across the UK.

Lindsey Rowe | Onboarding in a virtual world

Lindsey, Chief of Staff at SAP explains how they’re adapting to a virtual world. Learn how Lindsey and her team balance the ‘make it up as you go’ versus strategic planning, the role of their committee in the pre boarding and onboarding their placement students and how they believe future intakes will benefit from the rapid surge in content.

Matthew Brink | Global Graduate Recruitment Series, Part 4, USA 🇺🇸

Matt, Assistant Executive Director at National Association of Colleges & Employers (NACE) joins us in the fourth instalment of our global insight series. NACE’s remit across FE, HE and employers ensures a unique perspective on the US early careers market, with Matt sharing why campus recruiting is so popular for US organisations, the role of careers staff within institutions and why gamification in assessments surprisingly hasn’t quite kicked off yet.

Mark Yates and Judith Baines | Comparing and contrasting careers advice in secondary, FE & HE

Careers advice is a constant across secondary schools, further education establishments and universities, but how does it differ? Mark, Careers Adviser at Writtle University College in Chelmsford and Judith, Head of Careers & Employment Service at the University of Hertfordshire explore the new Graduate Outcomes survey, why weekly ‘Heads of Service’ calls are incredible for sharing best practice and how the Gatsby Benchmarks could work for universities.

Natasha Tahor & Ben Read | Wellbeing: Integrated marketing campaigns for the greater good

"50% students said they suffer from thoughts of self-harm and nine in 10 suffer from anxiety / loneliness" stated this Mental Health Survey read by Natasha, Emerging Talent Attraction & Branding Lead at Lloyds Banking Group (LBG) and Ben Read, Senior Account Manager at MSL when researching LBG’s campus campaign.

We discuss the growing importance for greater health and wellbeing support for university students and understand how LBG created an integrated campus campaign 'to make students smile', aligning it with their wider corporate charity Mental Health UK.

Peter Crisp and Ceri Evans | Graduate Apprenticeships in Law

Peter Crisp, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Law and Ceri Evans, the National Programme Director at the University of Law explore new graduate apprenticeships in the legal sector. Inspired by the medical profession, we discuss how firms can utilise Government funding for training and increase the diversity of their hiring, whilst reducing disruption for students getting a career into law which is also at zero cost to them. A win:win surely?

Dr Ulrich Hoppe | Why the German apprenticeship system isn’t right for the UK

Ulrich, Director General, German-British Chamber of Industry & Commerce continues our ‘Global Insights Series’ by sharing how the incredibly successful and much-feted German apprenticeship system works in the context of the German economy. We discuss the success of the low-paid German model for mid-tier apprenticeship roles and how he believes the UK economy and multi-level approach with greater financial rewards is over-complicating a ruthlessly efficient and highly successful process.

Chris Bishop | How to succeed at jobs that don't exist yet?

Chris, Chief Reinvention Officer at Improvising Careers, shares his future career toolkit, which involves ‘heading for the chaos’. He believes people will ‘have 8-10 jobs by the time they’re 38’ so the ability of students to focus on learning, unlearning and relearning. A TEDx speaker with a course on LinkedIn Learning, having started his career as a base guitarist having played with Chuck Berry… Chris is also the first guest to sing to us - not one to miss!
