Working Remotely 101

As a workforce, we have just made a very quick transition from being mostly office-based to working fully remote. This is a pretty huge change, particularly as the difference between working from home once or twice a week to every single day is BIG. 

We wanted to share some of our best practice tips and tricks to help you become a work-from-home WIZARD! So, let’s dive in…

8 tips to optimise working from home

  1. Make sure you have a good working set-up at home. Even if you don’t have a separate space to work, make sure the space you are working in is clean and comfortable. 

  2. Get dressed! It’s easy to slob about in your dressing gown or onesie all day, however, that relaxed approach physically will extend to your mental approach. If you’re dressed for work, you’ll feel in a better place to motivate yourself. (And you don’t risk letting anything slip out on your Zoom call 😜)

  3. Bookend your day. Setting a morning and evening ritual to define your day can really help create a sense of a working day, rather than sliding straight out of bed, opening your laptop and losing your morning completely.

    Equally important is the end of the day when you need to feel a sense that your working day is over. Close your laptop and put it away so you’re not tempted to keep working into your evening. 

  4. Take a proper lunch. It’s so important to break up your day and rest your brain. If you’re cooking your lunch, there is a real temptation to leave your laptop open and go from chopping an onion to responding to an email.

    Be disciplined with carving time out of your day to take that break. The same can be said for taking a tea break. If you normally make coffee with someone mid-morning - take those 5 minutes and have a natter over Zoom so you feel a sense of community. 

  5. Stay active! Whether it’s doing a Body Coach HIIT session, yoga with Adriene, Headspace meditation, or even just go for a walk. Getting your body moving is key to keeping your mind moving.

  6. Make the most of the tools you have to maximise communication. We’ve just tested out a Zoom video call for everyone in RMP, which helps us all stay connected with each other.

7. Vary your background tunes 🎵 There’s plenty of great playlists on Spotify, Soundcloud, YouTube and Amazon Music to explore, so keep mixing them up and recommending good playlists. Here’s a soul playlist recommended by Max in our commercial team.

8. Stay positive. It’s uncertain times for everyone and our positivity and togetherness will be tested. Try and avoid being a neggy-noo, you’ll bring people down and make your mindset worse? At our recent NUE Awards, our special guest speakers, the Tempest Two spoke about a growth mindset, so look at this situation with positive vibes and you’ll find we can all support each other.
